Costa Rica is PIA’s #1 destination.

From tropical rainforests to Pacific coastal fishing towns to cool mountain vistas, you have an endless variety of scenery and wildlife to photograph.

Birders are especially thrilled to find that there are more than 900 known species of birds, including toucans, hummingbirds, water fowl, and the highly-sought Resplendent Quetzal.

With four species of monkeys, sloths, frogs, and butterflies galore, the nature photographer will be in heaven. Add in 1400 (yep, 1400) species of orchids and a plethora of other exotic flowers, plants, and trees, and it gets hard to put down your camera.

Highlights

PIA’s 2020 Costa Rica photo expedition

We start out in the tropical Sarapiqui region

Where we’ll hike and photograph the Tirimbina Rainforest and The Pavilion, which Nat Geo calls one of the best indegenous bird sanctuaries. We’ll stop to shoot two waterfalls on the way.

We’ll boat down two rivers

The Sarapiqui and the Tarcoles, where we plan to see crocodiles, monkeys, lizards, parrots, scarlet macaws, herons, spoonbills, and much more.

We’ll visit La Fortuna

Spend time at Arenal Volcano, where we’ll wander the lush gardens, take a gentle hike to the waterfall then relax at natural hot springs. Later we can shop, go dancing, or just chill out poolside at the hotel.

We’ll visit...

Several national parks, tour a chocolate farm, and sample the wares.

The adventurous

Can zipline through the canopy of the rainforest.

Take a whale (and dolphin) watching tour

On the Pacific Ocean and spend an afternoon on the beach at Uvita, where we can watch the sun set.

We’ll hike the Sevegre Oak forest

In search of the rare and glorious Resplendant Quetzal. Photographers come from all around theworld to get a chance to capture her (incamera, of course!)

We’ll tour San Jose

And learn about the very heart of Costa Rican history and culture. There will be time for souvenir shopping!

We’ll end our photo adventure

At the beautiful Bougainvillea Hotel with its award winning botanical gardens.
